The Indian cabinet has cleared a proposal that makes employment of children below 14 years a cognizable offense with a maximum three years imprisonment or fine up to rupees 50,000 (US$909), according to news reports. The meeting presided by the Prime Minister also approved to raise the blanket ban on employing children in hazardous industries like mining from 14 to 18.
